Graduation Day- College Report 2015

Welcome address

We have gathered here to celebrate and validate the first graduation day ceremony of 2010 batch in TRIARD. It's a great day, one which we've been planning and waiting for. It’s my pleasure to welcome our esteemed chief guest, Dr. K. Varadharaajen, Founder and Chairman of Roever Educational Institutions. A hearty welcome to   Mr. John Ashok Varadharaajen, Vice-Chairman of Roever Educational Institutions. I am glad to welcome my colleague, Dr. S. Jebaraj, Special officer and convener of this ceremony. I would like to extend my warm welcome to Mrs. Chairman, the trustees of St. John Sangam trust, the Principals, the Vice-Principals, Heads of various Roever group of educational institutions, Our Senior Professors, Faculty members, Office Managers, other staff members, student volunteers of TRIARD, reporters from press and media and other off-stage technicians.  And finally, I would like to extend my favored, appreciative welcome to our special guests, “The Spartans, their parents and friends". We are truly delighted to have you all here today. It's my pleasure to extend a cheerful welcome to you all!.

College Report

Thanthai Roever Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development (TRIARD), is one of the Roever Group of Educational Institutions. This institute is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. TRIARD was initially started at the technical campus, Elambalur with a capacity of 23 students in Diploma in Agriculture programme during 1994 and then Diploma in Horticulture was started during 2001 with the capacity of 17 students. Then the B.Sc. (Ag) degree programme was started during 2008-09 with an intake of 39 students. The campus was later shifted to the present TRIARD Campus at Valikandapuram in the year 2010. The new campus has an Administrative Block cum Academic Block with a separate building for students’ dining hall and canteen. A play ground is also attached to the campus. The students’ canteen is also provided with facilities for making photocopy at nominal charges.

Infrastructure Facilities

At present, the college is functioning with five major Departments, namely

  • Department of Crop Management,
  • Department of Crop improvement,
  • Department of Crop Protection,
  • Department of Social Studies and Languages and
  • Department of Horticulture.

TRIARD has a total of 37 teaching faculties out of which 19 staff members are Ph.D holders. I am proud to state that TRIARD is better placed than other affiliated colleges with more number of staff with Ph.D and the with the recommended students-staff ratio. At present 354 degree and 140 diploma students are pursuing their studies.

TRIARD has facilities to conduct all the examinations for Degree students on line through exam pad. This unique system has been in vogue for the past three years.

The state-of-art facilities have been made available in the campus for empowering the students. TRIARD has well equipped Laboratories in Soil Science, Microbiology, Bio-Technology with tissue culture unit, Bio-Chemistry, Food Science, Agricultural Botany, Entomology and Pathology. I am proud to inform that the Computer laboratory is equipped with 60 systems connected with internet facilities. The students can have an access to the facility at any time for the preparation of project, assignment etc. A separate digital language lab has also been established with 30 computer systems installed with appropriate soft wares for developing the reading, listening, speaking and writing skills of the students. All the classrooms are facilitated with LCD projectors.  Commercial Azolla, Apiculture, Sericulture, Vermicompost units, Dairy, Piggery, poultry farming and Fish farming units are also available for imparting practical knowledge and skills to the students.

The library has been periodically updated with new editions of books in various subjects. It has 6000 books, 10 online National and International journals, 33 subscribed journals and magazines. Online virtual library has been established for easy access of the books for  the benefit of the students. Books and magazines useful for the various competitive examinations are also available.

The college has a field area of 157 acres for raising crop cafeteria of both agricultural and horticultural crops under wet land, garden land and dry land eco system. An orchard to an extent of 15 acres has been established at the central farm with different varieties of Mango, Guava, Sapota, Pomegranate and Aonla. An automatic weather station has been established with adequate equipments to measure the weather parameters.


TRIARD is embodied with adequate facilities for conducting research programs. The Department of Soil Science is the front runner in utilizing this facility. It obtained a scheme entitled ‘Bridging the Yield Gap of Maize in Perambalur District through induced Fertilization’ from Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology. In the first phase of this project, a soil data base has been developed for macro and micro nutrients for each block of Perambalur District. Field experiments and Demonstrations will be conducted at each block of Perambalur District to show the importance of application of optimum dose of fertilizer to reduce the input cost and residual effect of fertilizers.

The Department of Horticulture took up a project on ‘Production of Quality Planting Materials and Transfer of Technology Programme in Seed Spices’ in the year 2010 in collaboration with National Horticulture Mission with an objective of producing quality planting materials of Coriander, Turmeric, Curry Leaf and Chilies. Around 1000 farmers have been benefited through this scheme.

The Department of Microbiology is equipped with adequate facilities to produce Bio-fertilizers and Bio-control agents like Rhizobium, Pseudomonas and Trichoderma viride. These were produced in bulk quantities involving the students and supplied to the farmers through State Department of Agriculture.

Linkages with Other Institutions

TRIARD has a strong linkage with many Government and Non governmental Institutes and Industries. The Government Institutes include National Research Centre for Banana, Trichy; Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology, Thanjore; Research Institutes and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) of Tamil Nadu Agriculture University; Tamil Nadu University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, State Department of Agriculture and allied departments such as Horticulture, Forestry, Agricultural Engineering for the different academic activities.

This Institute has tie-up with many Agro Industries such as Rasi Seeds, Atthur; Dhanalaxmi Srinivasan Sugar factory, TARI Biotechnology, Syngenta, Kothari Sugars, E.I.D. Parry, Jain Irrigation systems, NSR Fruits, Dindigul, Salem Spices, Trichy under Agro Industrial Tie up Programme as a part of the Rural Agricultural work Experience Programme.

The Non Governmental Organizations such as M.S. Swaminatan Research Foundation (MSSRF),Chennai, YMCA, Kanyakumari; VOICE trust, Trichy; Nesa Karangal, Udumalpet coordinate with TRIARD for different socio-economic activities connected farming community.

Students RAWE Programme

In the final year of the curriculum, the students undergo Rural Agricultural Work Experience programme for a period of three months. During this period, the students get rural exposure by staying along with NGOs, Industries, State Department of Agriculture under Asst. Director of Agriculture and farmers. They have an opportunity to stay and move along with the farmers to study the day to day activities of the farmers. The students also help the farmers by organizing training to disseminate the latest technologies. In this academic year, about 30 trainings have been organized by the students in the different villages of Perambalur, Ariyalur, Dindigul, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Salem Districts. The students are also involved in social service programs by organizing soil sampling campaign and tree planting programs. I am proud to inform the house that in one of the tree planting programs of TRIARD students at Veppur Village on 15.10.2015, the Perambalur District Collector participated and motivated the students. I also wish to place on record that 10 students of TRIARD had a golden opportunity to interact with Dr. M. S. Swaminathan on 07.08.2015 during the RAWE program.

Sports and Games

Separate Physical Directors are available for Boys and Girls to train the students in various sports and games. TRIARD continues its great show in the arena of Inter Collegiate tournament of sports and Games particularly in athletics. In 2014, Mr.M.Bharathi Dhasan of IV B.Sc. (Ag) won the Best Athlete award and obtained overall Individual championship by winning four gold medals in the Inter Collegiate Tournament (ICT) held at AC & RI, Madurai. Apart from these, Mr.K. Prabhakaran, II  Diploma (Ag), won the Marathon race  by achieving   7th  place out of around 1000 participants on the eve of Youth Awareness  Day celebration. Every year, Intra College Tournament is conducted in our campus to select students for Inter College Tournaments in TNAU and other Universities.

Exposure Visits for Students

As a part of the curriculum, the students are taken to different places inside and outside the state to learn the latest technologies developed by the ICAR Institutes, SAUs, International Institutes like ICRISAT, Hyderabad. They travel throughout India from Kanya Kumari to Himachal Pradesh. One day short tour to visit Seed Testing and Soil Testing Laboratories, Pesticide Testing Laboratory, Cooperative Banks, Sugar Factories and Bio Fertilizer units are also regularly organized.

National Service Scheme

The NSS unit of TRIARD has 150 student volunteers. As a part of SWACHH BHARAT mission, which is a brain child of Honourable Prime Minister of India, the NSS unit created awareness among the public about cleanliness. This was held at the adopted village, Valikandapuram on 04.10.2015. A programme of ‘Yoga for Human Excellence’ was organized for nurturing the students by Easa Yoga, Perambalur and Yoga Centre, Gandhi museum, Madurai. Apart from these activities, regular programs such as solid waste management, Eye Camp, Blood Donation Camp, Awareness on Nutrition, etc are being organized regularly.

Placement Cell

So far 215 Degree students and 1050 diploma holders have passed out from this institute. I am happy to inform the House that around 700 Diploma holders of this Institute are employed as AAO & AHO in the State Department of Agriculture across Tamil Nadu. A separate placement cell is functioning in the campus to look after the placement activities. In the academic year 2014-15, 88 students were placed in various companies which include Rajshree Sugars, Coromandel International Limited, TARI Biotechnology, Syngenta, Kothari Sugars, E.I.D. Parry, NGO, Dow Agro Science, Krishi Rasayan, and Silver Green Agro Products Export Limited. In the year 2013-14, 41 students of degree and diploma have been placed in reputed companies like AECOM, Rasi Seeds Pvt. Ltd., Sathyam Bio Pvt. Ltd, Syngenta, Bayer, Sarangam Green Pvt. Ltd and Private Farms. TRIARD is taking continuous measures to enrich the knowledge and skills of the staff members. The staff members have undergone various training programmes to develop their personal as well as professional knowledge. In this academic year, the staff members have been periodically sent to various state and national level Institutes such as TNAU, Coimbatore; Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore and National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad. On-campus training was also imparted to the staff members on stress management.

I wish to extend my congratulation to all the 31 graduating students of 2010-14 batch. The knowledge, skill and attitude you gained in this institute will definitely shape up your personality and it will augment you in serving the society. I hope that you will involve in activities which will benefit the farming community in particular and the human society at large.

I take this opportunity of wishing all the graduates all the very best in their future endeavours.
